Description

This vivid little street scene depicts one of the roads that lead down to the river on Upper Mall, Hammersmith, looking across to what was Barnes Reservoir (now the site of St. Pauls School) and close to the Dove Pub which Spear, a man of rumbustious habits was later banned from! This was very much part of a locale Spear knew and loved deeply all his life and it shows in the sensitive rendering of the river-light and open wind-blown sky and trees so characteristic of this stretch of the river.
