Francis Butterfield, painter of figures, landscapes and non-figurative works in oils. Born in Bradford, Yorkshire, he attended evening classes with Henry Butler at the Bradford School of Art while working in woolstapling. From 1929 he rebelled against this and began painting in earnest, encouraged by prominent collectors such as Sir Michael Sadler. He became a member of the Seven and Five Society and exhibited with them in 1935, showing abstract works. He also had solo shows with the Zwemmer Gallery in 1934 and Leicester Galleries in 1937. In 1937, after spending time in a studio on the Left Bank in Paris, he settled in london. He was latterly an art editor. His work can be found in public galleries in Leeds, Sheffield and Wakefield.
