William Turnbull - b.1922


Born Dundee, Scotland, 11 January. A sculptor, artist in other media and teacher. He was interested at an early age in drawing and when he left school aged 15 he studied art in the evenings, enabling him to get a job as a magazine illustrator. After WW2 service as a pilot in the Royal Air Force Turnbull studied at Slade School of Fine Art 1947-8, then lived in Paris for several years where he met the two artists whose work was to profoundly influence his: Brancusi and Giacometti. Had his first one-man show at sculpture at the Hanover Gallery in 1950 and of paintings at the same gallery in 1952. In the 1950s he began to build up his impressive tally of overseas shows. From 1951 for a time he taught sculpture at Central School. Turnbull’s work went through a range of styles, idols and totemic figures being a leading feature. In 1973 the Tate Gallery held a retrospective exhibition. The Tate and many other principal museums hold examples. In 1995-6 he had his first major show for over 20 years at the Serpentine Gallery. Lives and works in London.
