Paul Maitland - 1869-1909
Painter of townscapes in oils, mainly of Chelsea Embankment and Kensington Gardens. He studied at the RCA, where he later taught, and under Theodore Roussel.
He exhibited with the London Impressionists in 1889 and also showed in London galleries, with the NEAC (member 1888), the RBA, in Glasgow and abroad. His work is represented in public collections including the Tate Gallery. A friend of Sickert who admired his work, between 1893 and 1908 he was Art Examiner to the Board of Education. Influenced by Roussel and Whistler, his atmospheric, small-scale works were painted from nature.
