Cedric Morris - 1889-1982

Painter of portraits, still-life, flowers, birds and landscapes, in oils and watercolours. He studied in Paris 1920-6 and exhibited with the AAA, The London Group, the 7 & 5 Society and at Tooths. He travelled widely, and lived in Cornwall and London before settling in East Anglia with Lett Haines with whom, in 1937, he opened the East Anglian School of Painting.

He co-founded the Colchester Art Society and was President of the South Wales Art Society. There are examples of his work in many national collections. His style reflects a close observation of people and nature, using strong colour and bold design.

His enthusiasm for gardening and flowers is represented by Iris Seedlings, 1943 (Tate Gallery).
