John Skeaping - 1901-1980


Born 1901. The son of a painter, he studied at Goldsmiths College and theCentral School of Art from 1917 to 1919 and at the Royal Academy from 1919 to 1920. He won the Prix de Rome in 1924 and married Barbara Hepworth in Florence the same year. He held his first solo exhibition (with Barbara Hepworth) in 1928. He became a member of the 7 and 5 society in 1932 and was a member of the London Group from 1928 to 1934. He was an official war artist from 1940 to 1945. He worked in Mexico from 1949 to 1950, when he was made an associate of the Royal Academy. He was made a Royal Academician in 1960. He taught sculpture at the Royal College of Art from 1948 and was a professor of sculpture there from 1953 to 1959. He wrote
Animal drawing (1936) How to draw Horses (1941) and the Great Trees of Mexico (1952). He is best known a sculptor of animals.
