Victor Willing - 1928-1988

Painter of portraits, figures, surrealistic and hallucinatory scenes in oils.

He studied at the Slade School 1949-53, where he was influenced by Giacometti and Bacon, and from 1957 to 1974 he lived in Portugal (he married Paula Rego).

He held his first solo exhibition in 1955 at the Hanover Gallery and has subsequently shown in London galleries including the Bernard Jacobson Gallery. Influenced by literature and philosophy, and visually by de Chirico, Matisse and Picasso, his irrational, symbolic images are simply constructed in strong colour.
