Nicolas Granger-Taylor, April 1999

This is Granger-Taylor’s first solo exhibition for six years, and comprises 30 works covering the period 1993-1999. He graduated from the Royal Academy Schools in 1990, having won the Richard Ford and Elizabeth Greenshields prizes.

His pictures seem half-lit by cool London light, so that in his still lifes the innate properties of inert objects come alive, and his nudes are uncompromising with elements of sensuality, even sexuality, not unlike the enigmatic eroticism of Balthus. Granger-Taylor is more interested in tone and colour rather than brushstrokes. It has been said of his works that they are 'cabinet pictures', meant to be enjoyed and studied in private.
