Bob Law first came to prominence in the early 1960s as part of the Situation group, when he was championed by Roland Penrose and Lawrence Alloway. He went on to produce some of the most inovative work of the Minimalist and Conceptual art movements in England. Kisses and Crosses is based on a series of drawings, juxtaposing the signs for a kiss and a cross, whose simple schema and pointed titles make reference to religion, love, rejection and national identity. The prints were made by the artist first gouging into black painted paper with a screw, and then transferring the resulting images onto etching plates using photogravure.
