In 1966, already acknowledged as a highly original abstract sculptor, AnthonyCaro ventured into a new area of work in the form of table sculptures. Theseunique small scale sculptures were from the inception considered as works ofart in their own right, and not maquettes or diminshed versions of largerworks.Caro's Table Piece and similarly titled Writing Piece sculptures wereconceived as abstract compositions. They were constructed from found objects, often tool parts, and were intentionally kept to a human scale. In the earlyseventies these works became increasingly innovative when the artist extendedvarious elements of the sculpture away from the supporting surface, reaching into the surrounding space. This extension of the sculpturesinto the real world, and the mediating charcter of the table-like surfacebecame a platform for new expressive opportunities, reflected in theirallusory titles 'Tiger', 'Portland', 'Turn Again', 'Bells'.The Tate Collection has two closely comparable works: The recently acquiredWriting Piece 'Other', 1970 and Table Piece CCLXVI, 1975 |
