William Scott’s mother was indeed Scottish and was born in Greenock on the Firth of Clyde. However as his father was Irish, he went on to study at the Belfast College of Art from 1928 to 1931, and later at the Royal Academy Schools in London, from 1931 to 1935.

Scott’s paintings have been shown nationally and internationally; retrospective exhibitions were held at the Venice Biennale in 1958 and at the Tate Gallery in 1972. His interest in still life painting grew out of studying the works of Cezanne.

'I wanted to look at Cezanne, not through Cubist eyes, but rather through the eyes of Chardin'.
