Born in Montana, USA, McKnight Kauffer came to England in 1914, after a year’s study in Paris. He exhibited as a painter until 1921, becoming Secretary to the London Group, and participating in the Group X exhibition in March 1920, organised by Wyndham Lewis. Amongst the ten painters included were Roberts, Wadsworth, and Dobson.

He also achieved public recognition and critical success as a graphic artist, and as chief poster designer for London Underground for over twenty-five years. His work familiarised a very wide public with the conventions of modern painting in a popular, decorative, but vigorous cubist style.
