Lawrence Gowing became a pupil of William Coldstream in 1936 at his school in Fitzroy Street. In 1938, he studied at the Euston Road School where he met Victor Pasmore, Rodrigo Moynihan and Graham Bell. Between 1942 and 1955 he exhibited regularly at the Leicester Galleries, subsequently showing at the Marlborough and Waddington Galleries.

This painting is one of a series of still lifes of apples that Gowing produced during the 1940’s.

'There were the first of the pickings of cooking apples, of which I painted fourteen in the next five years. The bright green was a kind of inheritance from Graham Bell'.
