'Mangalore is the town', wrote Ibn Battutah, 'at which most of the merchants from Persia and Yemen disembark, and pepper and ginger are exceedingly abundant there'. The port lies in a sheltered inlet; here, on the other side of a narrow peninsula, is the Arabian sea.
