It shows the promontary at St. Ives known as ‘The Island’, with the sandy Porthmeor Beach to the left, the distinctive steps of the stone St Nicolas's Chapel and the only other built structure just behind it at St Ives Head.

Here we are made acutely aware of the four edges of the board - firstly by the thin strip of sea around three sides of the board and then by the man-made path around the edge of the island. Punctuated by pairs of things, two rocks - one on the beach, two patches of scrub on the island, two buildings and two boats. The farthest corner of the island (where the coastguard has a lookout) is emphasised by being positioned in the uppermost corner of the board.

Two two-masted sailing boats (Schooners) travel up the left hand side of the board in the wild and choppy waters of the Atlantic, with the water to the right of picture the relative calm of St Ives Bay.
