Dynamism and an incredible amount of energy can also be felt in Miami from 1996. Hodgkin closes the canvas in bold brushstrokes, revealing only the lower third of a fleshy pink color field speckled with green, creating a sense of illusion of space and depth. The iridescent, image-defining blue that he mixes with black in the upper area and white in the lower area, undoubtedly suggests the mood of the seemingly endless expanse of the North Atlantic and the horizon above it.
Howard Hodgkin was born in London in 1932. From 1949-1954 he studied at the Camberwell School of Art in London and at the Bath Academy of Art in Corsham, where he worked as a lecturer until 1966. In 1962 he traveled to India for the first time. From this a lifelong passion for collecting Indian art should develop. From 1966 to 1972 he was appointed to the Chelsea School of Art in London. In 1984 he represented Great Britain at the Venice Biennale. The Tate Gallery in London shows the first retrospective in 1985. In the same year, Hodgkin receives the Turner Prize. Numerous other awards and prizes followed, as well as a major retrospective in 2006 with stops at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina SofĂa, Madrid and the Tate Gallery of British Art in London. Hodgkin was artistically active until his death in 2017.
