This is one of Turnbull’s most significant sculptures from the mid-1950s. Inspired by Picasso’s corrugated assemblages and Giacometti’s modelled standing figures, it demonstrates how Turnbull found his own path through their work to arrive at a sculpture that initiates his life-long engagement with the standing female figure. The sculpture was first shown in Turnbull’s solo exhibition at the ICA in 1957 and was also included in his retrospective at the Tate in 1973.
