Provenance

Commissioned directly from Hans Coper by Neil Munro 'Bunny' Rogers in 1960
His sale, Sotheby's, London, 28th January 1998
Private Collection, London

NEIL MUNRO ‘BUNNY’ ROGER

A celebrated couturier and English socialite, Roger (1911-1997) is perhaps best known for his invention (or mass popularisation) of the Capri pants. His parties became the thing of legend in English society – stylish, flamboyant and fun. His personal taste was reflected in the houses that he lived in during his life, and in the 1960s he commissioned both Rie and Coper to create large-scale planters of jardinières for his interiors. Following his death in 1997 these were auctioned off with other contents from his home by Sotheby's.

This is a rare example of Coper using stamps to create patterns or a motifs within his surfaces, typically preferring to incise the clay directly, or use a sgraffito technique to create designs.
