Richard Allen: Victoria Art Gallery, Bath

9 April - 5 June 2011
Overview

Richard Allen attended the influential Bath Academy of Art from 1957-60. He embraced the unconventional teaching methods of Clifford Ellis, Principal of the Academy, and his wife Rosemary, as well as luminaries from the London art world such as Gillian Ayres and Robyn Denny. Allen cited Howard Hodgkin and Martin Froy as his main influences at the college, and particularly admired the abstract collage work of Adrian Heath and Gwyther Irvin.

An important career as an abstract painter followed. Allen exhibited alongside Bridget Riley and Michael Kidner in early Op Art shows in the mid-sixties, he was a key figure in two Systems exhibitions and had a solo-exhibition at the ICA, London in 1975.

This exhibition focuses on key works from the 1960s to 1970s, including graphics.
