In the mid-1950s Turnbull bought a number of rare rosewood logs and in subsequent years made a body of beautiful works that continue the theme of the totem-figure. The logs are barely modified instead they are cut and assembled in 'stacks' with other materials. These works took their titles from the protagonists of ancient history and classical mythology - here it is Hannibal, warrior and enemy of Rome. These pieces stand directly on the floor and most are human scale, so allowing a close physical relationship between sculpture and viewer.
